Our culture was changed when the State usurped the control of the economy from the natural free market forces. Ironically another way of stating this is that the State created a counterfeit ethic, built upon the counterfeiting practices of the ego-driven interventionists.
Fiat currencies, claims to people's incomes, laws originating from the minds of ego-driven interpreters all are examples of some of the counterfeit practices which over several generations of complacency created a counterfeit ethic.
Succinctly it can be classified as materialism. Deferred gratification is a necessary part of an ever-advancing civilization because it is the source of savings which is the foundation of capital and capital structure.
